Growing up, I wasn’t a big jam fan. Which is surprising for a kid. Why, you ask?
Well, jam is basically fruit coloured sugar. So it’s surprising that a kid wouldn’t like it. But I didn’t.
Jam, jelly, all of it. Basically a spread made from sugar or sugar-like products with a sprinkling of fruit. Even the ones that are “100% real fruit” or “double the fruit”…yup-all sugar sugar sugar.
I’m not saying they aren’t delicious, I’m just saying there are better options. OPTIONS? What are these so called options? I’ll tell you.
For starters, nut butters!
All natural, no sugar added nut butters are a much better option for your toast. And SO delicious. Plus they come with the added benefits of healthy fats and protein. They’re readily available these days at any grocery store. Just make sure you’re getting the ones that only have ONE ingredient, and that should be nuts.
Peanut, almond, cashew or hazelnut. I DO NOT mean the ones with chocolate or marshmallow. Just nuts!
What else? Well, honey is a great option. A drizzle of this good stuff is a natural sweetener that won’t sky rocket your blood sugar levels. Maybe don’t layer it on, but a drizzle is delicious and has so many health benefits!
APPLE BUTTER! Might take a little time and effort but it’s worth it. This stuff is delicious! Try this recipe and keep it on hand for the morning.
Fruit pizza on toast or whole grain buns are a great option instead of jam as well. Spread some plain yogurt on toast and top with your favourite sliced fruit. Sprinkle some nuts or seeds and you’ve got an awesome breakfast. Hearty, healthy and satisfying.
Last, but not least-JAM. Just this jam, not the kind you can buy at the store. Make your own, I promise, it’s SO easy. You only need three ingredients and a little time.
