How bad do you want it?

To be honest, I don’t want it that bad right now.  I used to want it really, really bad.  But now…not so much.

What am I talking about? Health, fitness, all of it.
After having three babies in three years, my weight went up and down like a carousel on speed!  After my second and third, I decided to work really hard, eat right and exercise pretty much daily.  It took almost as long as it did to grow a baby, but I got my weight back down (and then got pregnant again and then again…got my weight back down).  Now I am smaller than I have ever been in my adult life.  I’m so happy!  And it was because I wanted it really badly…and now…well, I sort of want it sometimes…

Don’t get me wrong. I will always WANT to be healthy. It’s what I have to DO to be truly healthy. Sometimes I don’t feel like working out or going for a run. Sometimes I want pie for dinner. You understand, right? We ALL understand. And that’s what I mean by “How bad do you want it?” I would never imply that someone WANTS to be unhealthy. But sometimes…it can be a chore.

This is the roller coaster of life, isn’t it? We get motivated, we get on track, we get into an awesome routine…feel amazing-and then…what? Christmas? A party? A BBQ? SUMMER? OH NO-Your routine changed! Yes…it can all derail our efforts to be healthy, but it’s LIFE.

I’ve learned through crazy times of being overly focused (Not eating ANYTHING remotely “bad” for you and having insane guilt over not exercising enough) and crazy times of being completely out of focus (drinking a lot, eating badly, being completely and totally sedentary) that there is a happy medium. For me. For you. For all of us. And surprise! It’s different for everyone!

Uh oh. Did I say there wasn’t a magic potion? Oh darn. I let the cat out of the bag. NO ONE HAS A MAGIC WEIGHT LOSS/HEALTH PLAN that is a One-Size-Fits-All. Don’t buy the hype. And don’t buy the books. And don’t buy the pills. Please don’t buy the pills. Or powders. Or shakes. Just don’t.

Invest in yourself. Educate yourself. This MAY mean seeking out professional help from a personal trainer (never a bad thing) or a nutritionist/dietician (for INDIVIDUALIZED consultations/assessments/meal planning and such). Finding help is fantastic, but you have to do what works for you. If you’re really confused about food, get help to figure it all out. If you’re totally confused about exercise, get help. Join a running club, look online, go to a gym.

I don’t have all the answers. But I will tell you this truth: NO ONE KNOWS EVERYTHING. You are an individual person with individual needs. Not only might you need a completely different diet and exercise plan than your neighbor, but you probably LIKE different foods and you probably have different schedules and strengths. Makes sense, doesn’t it?

If you want hardcore results, you need a hardcore plan. If you’re happy with being healthy and treating yourself occasionally, then DO THAT. Quality of life is a very important thing. If an hour out of your day working out is pure torture and eating vegetables makes you gag all the time, DON’T DO IT. Find a way to be healthy on your own terms. Play a sport! Have a smoothie and hide the veggies. There are ways to do it, and you CAN. Don’t have regrets. Regrets suck.

Trends are simply that…trends. They will come and go. Move your body. Eat foods from the earth and you’ll do alright. How bad do you want it? Well, that’s also different for everyone.

We all go through tough times. It’s fall, summer is over. Although we all want to, not the time to hunker down and eat mashed potatoes. Learn to make a few healthy soups and stews…make that your comfort food. Go for a hike, enjoy the colours and move your body. Breathe. Smile.

Life is full of ups and downs. You can’t beat yourself up about them. Just work towards wanting it…and soon enough, you’ll want it bad. Or not.

This made me decide to want it really bad. I feel better already. And happy! So…tell me, how bad do YOU want it?
